British Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The location, located using surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a series of entry passages leading to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - referred to as Daesh - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action demonstrates British leadership, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their professionalism and their valour," he commented. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, keeping Britain secure within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the US military executed what it described as a "massive strike" on Daesh sites in the country, following an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Islamic State still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in both countries.
